The codfish lover’s restaurant in the Costa Brava.
L’Hort del Rector is located in one of the most important medieval villages of the Costa Brava: Monells. A visit to Monells is a must do for any visitor of the region, like Peratallada, Pals or Begur. The village square is unique and spectacular. Sant Genis Church is very special too. In the square, you can find an old measure for selling grain, as Monells was the main market of the area. You can see remains of the old medieval wall, and the the Rissec riverbed which divides the village in two parts.
Ambiance and service:
You don’t need to enter the village, as the entrance is in the main road that crosses Monells, in front of the Sant Genis church. Walking down through trees and nature you quickly find the lovely house where the restaurant is situated, stoned walls and surrounding garden with tables and a very special environment, recommended in spring and summer.
Inside, nice decoration with an old piano, paintings, books, beautiful lights, historical photos, wood furniture and spacios but intimate dinning rooms. A great atmosphere that you can feel as soon as you sit and start enjoying their wines, cavas, food and service.
Anita, the owner, is very nice and friendly with all customers. She talked with me for a while, explaining Monell’s history and curiosities, the restaurant history and how they started. They came from Canada to Emporda and continued with the specialty of the restaurant, codfish, in 1999. They speak perfect english, french, german, spanish and catalan. That’s important for feeling like home.
Killian, Anita’s son, runs the kitchen efficiently and prepares with love and passion all their dishes.
Food and Drink:
They are widely known in the region for its codfish specialties. Cod lovers from everywhere go to L’Hort del Rector to taste their delicious cod dishes. It really deserves a visit, at the same level like going to a museum.
Starters: Cod puffs, smoked cod carpaccio, canelloni filled with creamed cod, “escalivada” (grilled vegetables), cod patties with a sauce cream of prawns, cod-balls with a sauce of raisins and pine nuts, etc.
Main courses: Fried cod with white beans and sweet paprika, cod “a la Biscayan” and “a la Ampurdan”, cod with cream sauce of onions and cheese, cod with tomato marmelade and herbs, cod on a bed of spinach and honey, cod with prawns and allioli, cod with ratatouille, cod grandmother’s style, cod with garlic with beans muleteer style, cod with a cream sauce of truffles, cod with mustard and honey cream sauce, cod with escargots in spicy tomato sauce and a special assortment of three cods.

Appetizers like asparagus tips served with mayonnaise, garden salad with tuna, with smoked salmon, salad of tomatoes and grilled goat cheese, shrimo and rock fish terrine with salad, canelloni with cream sauce of onions and cheese, stuffed “piquillo” peppers served Zarautz style and grilled vegetables.
They also offer some meat specialties like duck magret, duck confit with sweet and sour sauce, veal striploin and tenderloin, “chuletón”. Meat from Girona, one of the best in Catalonia.
They offer a quality selection of wines, including some from Emporda and many others from different wine regions in Catalonia and Spain, like Penedes, Costers del Segre, Montsant, Priorat, Somontano, Rueda, Navarra, Rioja and Ribera del Duero. They also have some cava, something that I highly recommend to try when you come, before or after your meal.
