Charming hotel ideal for couples and romantic trips to The Pyrenees, Andorra and La Seu d’Urgell.
After years working on other projects, Gabi and Nuria, the owners of this lovely hotel, decided to start a new adventure. A very special story that I will summarize. Nuria’s brother heard on the radio that the owners of a hotel in the Pyrenees were looking for new people to run the hotel as they wanted to retire. He called Nuria right that moment and then started a long period of presenting ideas, studies and references to be chosen among the 140 applicants. Now, they manage the hotel and the restaurant efficiently and with so much love.
Cal Miquel is located in the Valira Valley (Vall de la Valira) in Anserall, a very small village with narrow streets, a lovely creek and the typical catalan houses from the Pyrenees. Anserall is well known thanks to its Romanesque church (Sant Serni de Tavèrnoles). That’s the heart of the oriental/catalan Pyrenees, province of Lleida.
Driving: 2 minutes from La Seu d’Urgell and 15 from Andorra, located next to the main road that connects them.
I love the mountains as much as I love the sea, but I prefer hotels in mountain areas, especially in winter, I guess because the need of a home and warm place to stay. Cal Miquel is a rural hotel with modern facilities and accommodation. An old restored house surrounded by nature and peace.
Inside: wood, beautiful ceilings, many places to sit and relax, listen to music, read a book or enjoy a conversation. On the walls, many art pieces, such as paintings or old black and white photographs.
The staff is very friendly. Nuria and Gabi, the owners, are always around taking care personally of guests needs, something that I appreciate very much. Many times I did not find this level of service and care in high class hotels or rural houses.
Facilities and Services:
Breakfast is included (juice, tea, coffee, croisants, cakes, fruit, etc). Free parking, free wifi in the whole hotel, cafeteria, living-room, interior patio with tables, restaurant, free bycicles and a big meeting room perfect for companies that want to meet in a different environment, having food and sleep covered at the same place.
Nuria, Gabi and all the staff will give you advice if needed, as well as making reservations for interesting activities in the area.
The hotel is divided in two parts. There are 2 floors in one building with normal, double and superior rooms. I stayed in the superior room but saw almost all the rest. I loved them all, with a rural but modern style at the same time. Great bathrooms and showers. I got one if my longest shower ever there. TV, desk, sofa and mini-bar.
Many rooms have a window in the ceiling, which I really loved. I remember it raining a lot at night and how beautiful that was from the warm, soft and comfy bed of my room.
The other part is next to the main building, across the interior patio. There are apartments for 4, 5 and 6 people with balcony, kitchen and plenty of space. Pretty much the same style and decoration. Perfect for families or friends.
In general, there’s a lot of space and comfort, charming and modern atmosphere, old and new, past and present.
Very nice restaurant. Small and charming, offers a great gastronomic experience based on traditional regional dishes with a modern and original touch. Read the full review here.
Visit the church in Anserall which is really nice. You will need the key to enter, but the hotel has a copy so you just have to ask them for it. Without having to take the car, you can also explore beautiful paths through the mountains. They are very well maintained and marked. Those mountains, roads and paths have a long history behind, as they were used by many people and purposes, trying to avoid the border. You can walk, run or use the free hotel bicycles.
La Seu d’Urgell is 5 minutes driving from the hotel. Visit the only Romanesque Cathedral in Catalunya, walk the streets and discover cute and special shops, cafeterias, tea shops and restaurants. Parc del Segre is a very nice park, quite big and known for its canals and sports activities. kayaking, canoeing, rafting and much more. People interested in water sports go to La Seu d’Urgell to practice due to its incredible nature, facilities and services. There are street markets every Tuesday and Saturday. Once a year (every third weekend of October) there is an amazing cheese fair. Cheese and cold sausages from the area are really good, some of the best products in Spain and Catalunya is produced here.
Andorra is 15 minutes away by car. Known for its commerce, tax free, luxury, spa’s, sports and much more. Andorra is another country, small and special, that you can explore and maybe find something nice for you, family or friends.
Other nice things to do and see around: La Pera lakes, Sant Joan Fumat, Arcavell, Arseguel (accordion festival), golf course at 5 km., etc.
Ski: In Andorra you’ll find some of the best ski slopes at Grand Valira, Soldeu and Vall Nord.
